A history of high temperature coatings in the aerospace industry

Abstract – High temperature coatings have been enabling materials within the turbine engine industry.  Pratt & Whitney has been on the forefront of coating design, development and application.  Talk will review past, present and the potential future of high temperature coatings. These coatings have and continue to excellent oxidation, corrosion and thermal protection to demanding turbine airfoil applications from the 1950s to today. Various technologies and implementations will be discussed that covers usage legacy aircraft engines to modern engines used today.

Speaker – Xuan Liu  - Pratt & Whitney

Technical Fellow in High Temperature

Bio – Xuan Liu is a Technical Fellow in high temperature coatings at Pratt & Whitney with a focus on corrosion and oxidation-resistant coatings for turbine airfoils. He has led advanced coating technology development and deployment initiatives across the OEM and aftermarket segments of Pratt & Whitney’s turbine engine business. He obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Penn State in 2015 and his B. S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2011.
